Cleft in the Hill, Lunga I

The geological formation of the Ardfern peninsula has resulted in a natural gap in the ridge overlooking Loch Melfort and the Isle of Luing to the north.
The proposal was to build a two storey house within this gap, with bedrooms below a large open living space. The building incorporated full height glazing and balconies to the north, to take advantage of the wonderful view, and a glazed clerestory to the south above the kitchen to allow afternoon sun into the living area.

The structure is a steel frame with heated polished concrete floors, highly insulated walls, and a turf covered roof, allowing the building to be camouflaged from view.
