Coull Garden, Contin

An existing bungalow in a south facing but derelict walled garden is partly demolished to allow a new house to be built alongside it, which has full height glazing to the south facing public rooms. A new driveway skirts the edge of the garden to arrive at a new courtyard at the rear of the new building, and the entrance is located between the old and the new, with a strip of service spaces along the north elevation forming the stone flagged entrance court.
The house is heavily insulated, with a heated polished concrete floor maximising passive solar gain. Two guest bedrooms and a study overlook the double height living room and dining/kitchen, while a small and intimate “snug” is positioned beneath the study with its own woodburning stove for use on cold winter evenings. Solar panels are positioned on the roof of the old building, and the garden is completely re-landscaped and planted.
